1. FLVPlayer HD – Adobe Air FLV Media Player

    December 31, 2009 by

FLVPlayer HD is a cross-platform FLV(Flash Video) media player developed on Adobe Air. Ofcourse VLC Media Player, Media Player Classic, GOM Player, etc are all able to play flv video files, even the default Windows Media Player in Windows 7 can play .flv format. But in some cases(very few) if the video or audio is lagging, then you can give FLVPlayer HD a shot.

It has a simple interface where you can play the video files by either manually opening it or dragging&dropping any flv file. You can Play/Pause the video, move the slider to jump anywhere in the video, change volume, and switch to full screen, all-in-all it contains some very basic functions only.

One feature that stands out is the seamless online streaming of flv video file. Enter a URL of flv video file and it will start streaming instantly.

    FLVPlayer

It can play flv videos in HD format as well. The developer plans to add more functionality in the next release.

Download FLVPlayer HD (site is in Spanish language, click FLVPlayer.air to download)

Since it is developed on Adobe Air, it can be installed on Windows, Mac, and Linux.

  2. PowerPoint 2010: Prevent Black Slide From Appearing At The End Of Presentation

    December 30, 2009 by

When you are showing a presentation to your viewers then you might have noticed that when you reach the end of the presentation, PowerPoint shows you a black screen. If you want to include a special slide at the end rather than a black slide, then you can easily override this default setting in PowerPoint 2010.

Click the Office(File Menu) button and choose Options.

PowerPoint 2010 Option In the PowerPoint Options dialogue box, choose the Advanced option in the left sidebar and locate the Slide Show option in the main window.

    Advanced SlideShow PowerPoint

Now uncheck the option End with black slide.

  3. Repair Missing CD-DVD Drive In Windows 7

    December 29, 2009 by

If for some unknown reason your Windows 7 CD-DVD drive goes missing, then there is a high probably that you tried installing a buggy software which messed up the registry or other Windows files.

Rizone CD-DVD Repair is a small portable utility which can quickly fix missing drives. Apart form the basic functionality it also allows resetting of Autorun settings and protection against Autorun parasites(virus).

The former lets you repair the Autoplay/Autorun settings if for some reason it fails to work, while the latter provides protection against Autorun virus by disabling the Autorun feature for removable drives. The latter option is however useless in Windows 7 since Microsoft have permanently disabled autorun.inf for removable drives in this latest OS.

    Windows 7 CD-DVD Repair

Just to be on the safe side, we would recommend unchecking both additional options before clicking Repair CD-DVD. Use the first option only if AutoPlay fails to work, we would however never recommend checking the 2nd option in Windows 7. Please note that this tool requires system reboot.

    Download Rizone CD-DVD Repair

It works on Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003/2008, and Windows 7.

  4. Fast Portable Desktop Search Engine Tool

    by

I have tried desktop search tools of almost every type, there are a few that stand out, but none beats the simplicity, accuracy, and speed of Everything.

Just grab the portable version, launch it up and start searching. It will display the results in real-time. The clean minimalist design, combined with minimal resource usage and quick file indexing/searching makes it a must-have search tool for every Windows user out there.

Is it any better then the default Windows Start Search in Start Menu? Yes, by a thousand folds. Out of the 10 searches I performed, Everything scored 10/10 while the default Windows Start Search scored 1/10, you do the maths.

    Everything Desktop Search

Right-click any file and you will see the context menu which is similar to that of Windows Explorer context menu. By creating an HTTP or ETP/FTP connection with a server you can search for files on the network quickly. To further filter out the results, you can choose to Match Case, Match Whole Word, or Match Path, you can also enable regex(regular expressions).

    Everything Search Filter

Go to Tools > Options and you can select various preferences from the General tab, such as, create shortcuts, run on system startup, allow multiple windows/instances, set hotkeys, etc. The View tab contains options related to how you might want to view the search results.

The most important tabs are Volumes and Exclude, the former allows user to select the destination that should be indexed while the latter can be used to exclude a destination. You can also choose to exclude the hidden and system files and folders.

    Everything Options

    Download Everything

There are two versions available, default installer and portable. We gave the portable version a try since it can be carried on the USB drive and requires no installation. It works on Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003/2008, and Windows 7.

  6. Remove OneNote 2010 Screen Clipper From Startup

    December 28, 2009 by

When you start OneNote 2010, Microsoft automatically adds OneNote 2010 Screen Clipper to run on startup. This can be quite annoying if you don’t want OneNote to run on startup. Want proof? Have a look at the screenshot below.

    OneNote 2010 Screen Clipper shortcut

There is no option to remove OneNote 2010 Screen Clipper from the system tray context menu.

    Office 2010 OneNote Side Note

If you are not a OneNote 2010 user but used it just for the sake of giving it a try, then you can get rid of the startup item by deleting OneNote from the Startup folder(see first screenshot).

But if you use OneNote 2010 but don’t want it to run on system tray during startup, then head over to Office Backstage(File Menu) and select Options. Now select the Display tab from the left sidebar, uncheck ‘Place OneNote icon in the notification area of the taskbar’ and hit OK.

  7. Enable Scheduled Optimization Of Windows Media Center

    by

If you are a big fan of the Windows Media Center and want it to run smoothly then you should schedule the optimization. The Windows Media Center performs optimization itself to make it run more smoothly, please note that during the time it is performing optimizations, you can not use it.

Type Windows Media Center in Start Search and hit Enter to launch it. No head over to the Settings.

Under the General Category, choose the Optimization Option.

Now Check the Perform optimization checkbox and set the desired Optimization schedule time.

  9. Small Portable Minimalist M3 Music Player

    December 27, 2009 by

M3 is the smallest portable music player you will ever come across. Combined with minimalist user interface, it is perfect for carrying on a USB drive. It contains no menu, simply drag & drop a music file and it will start playing instantly. Drag multiple music files and they will be added to the playlist.

    M3 Music Player

It can play three audio formats, mp3, wav, and wma. Click the clipboard icon to show/hide playlist. The playlist is searchable, the results are highlighted in real-time.

    M3 Portable Music Player

When it comes to control, there are only three button given – previous track, play/pause, and next track. There is no build-in option to increase/decrease the volume, but you can change the volume using Window’s default Volume Control. This makes sense since the author wanted the player to be as minimalist as possible.

The player sits on the lower-right side of the screen and can be minimized to the system tray. The developer wanted the UI to be small to save maximum screen space, great for netbooks and small laptops.

    M3 Music Player context menu

You can choose to shuffle the music from both with-in the playlist and from the context menu. A small pop-up is displayed when the next track begins to play, this can also be disabled from the context menu.

    Download M3 Music Player

The total size of the player is just a little over 100Kb. It works on all versions of Windows, including both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 7.

Power Triggers is a small utility for running batch file on suspend(sleep) and/or run another batch on resume(wake). Both are optional, which means you can either choose to run batch file before sleep or after wake or both.

It sits in the system tray and takes only 4Mb of system memory. It can come useful on wide range of issues, such as, removing errors on suspend and resume. Technically you can perform any action before sleep and after wake up with this tool.
