1. Cannot Start Outlook 2010? Use Safe Mode

    November 30, 2009 by

If your Outlook 2010 is crashing due to a culprit add-in, then the only possible way is to start it in safe mode and remove the add-in. Apart from add-ins, there could be hundreds of other reasons why your Outlook is crashing. In all cases you will need to start Outlook 2010 in safe mode.

So how would you start Outlook in safe mode? Go to Start Search, type Run, and hit Enter. Once the Run dialog window is open, you can type any one of the four switches.

    Run Outlook 2010 safe mode

outlook /safe – Starts Outlook without Microsoft Exchange Client Extensions (ECE), the Reading Pane, or toolbar customizations. Component Object Model (COM) add-ins are turned off.

outlook /safe:1 – Starts Outlook with the Reading Pane off.

outlook /safe:3 – Starts Outlook with Microsoft Exchange Client Extensions (ECE) turned off, but listed in the Add-In Manager. Component Object Model (COM) add-ins are turned off.

outlook /safe:4 – Starts Outlook without loading outcmd.dat (customized toolbars).

For some reason, /safe:2 switch is not included so typing it will give you ‘wrong switch’ error.

These switches can also help us in pinpointing the exact problem. Suppose you can run Outlook in /safe and /safe:4 switch, but not in /safe:1 and /safe:3 switch, this means the problem is occurring in the customized toolbar.

Please note that these switches work for Outlook 2007 as well. For more, if you are using Firefox, we have a guide to launch it in Safe Mode too.

  2. Is Outlook 2010 Slow? Download Email Header Only

    November 29, 2009 by

Running Outlook 2010 offline can be useful if you want to perform any task other than email. But what if you have 100 emails and it is taking forever to download them? By default Outlook 2010 downloads both the emails and the attachments and does not ask the user about this setting when setting up an account for the first time.

In Outlook 2007 you could hit Ctrl+Alt+S to open your Outlook Send and Receive Groups, but this is not the case in Outlook 2010. You first need to head over to the Send/Receive tab and Go to Send/Receive Groups -> Define Send/Receive Groups as shown in the screenshot below.

    define send receive groups

This will open the main window of Send/Receive Groups. Here select the Group Name and hit Edit.

    Send Receive Groups

Now under the Account Options, select ‘Download headers for subscribed folders’. This will download your emails faster by ignoring the attachments. This can be a quick way to send/receive emails and save time.

    All Accounts Outlook 2010

For some people this method might not make sense since attachments are an integral part of their communication. But I prefer downloading attachments using GMail, also if the attachment is a .doc, .docx, or .pdf file then Google Docs can open it quickly.

All attachments that are downloaded using Outlook 2010 is scanned in real-time with Microsoft Security Essentials(if installed). So it is safe to download attachments using Outlook 2010 or any other email client.

    by

Did you know that Windows 7 uses it’s own DirectShow filters to decode several audio and video formats? If you want to use third party filters then it is not possible without making changes to the registry, which can be quite a hectic process.

Preferred Filter Tweaker for Windows 7 is a small tool that allows you to quickly configure the preferred DirectShow filters with just a few clicks. Suppose you have K-Lite codec pack or any other third party codec pack installed and want to use ffdshow to decoding H.264 video, then you can do so using this tool.

Once you start the program, choose the preferred DirectShow decoding filters and hit Apply. On the left side you will find 32-bit decoders and on the right, 64-bit decoders. By default the filters are selected to Microsoft, this can be useful in case you want to revert back to Microsoft later.

    Windows 7 DirectShow Filter Tweaker

This tool is useful only where media players are using DirectShow Filters. For example Windows Media Player 12 uses Media Foundation instead of DirectShow to play .m2ts, .mp4, and .mov formats. But for other formats it uses DirectShow filters and they can be tweaked using this tool.

It can set preferred filter for the following video formats – H.264, MPEG-4(Xvid/DivX/MP4V), MPEG-2, VC-1, AAC, MP3, and MP2. The following third party filters are supported:

    Supported third party filters (32-bit)

  5. Microsoft Outlook 2010: What’s New?

    November 28, 2009 by

We have been covering  new features in Office 2010 for a few months now, and have brought you several detailed articles on Word 2010, Excel 2010, PowerPoint 2010, and OneNote 2010. It is time to have a look at the new features in Outlook 2010.

    Outlook Social Connector (OSC)

This is perhaps the greatest new addition to Outlook 2010 which you will definitely love to use.  It brings the social views of your friends/contacts right in to your inbox. This connector provides you with a stream of content from SharePoint, Windows Live and other famous social networking sites. At the bottom of your Outlook emails, you will see the latest social networking posts of your contact.

    Outlook Social Connector

    Quick Steps

The Quick Steps feature of Outlook 2010 lets you consolidate multiple steps into one. So once you will click the Quick Step, it’s relevant multiple steps (as per your configuration) will occur. You can locate the Quick Steps option under the Home menu.

    Quick Steps

We have covered it in full details in one of our previous posts, which you can read here.

    Publish Online

The Publish Online feature lets your Outlook 2010 calendar synchronize with Office Online or a WebDAV server. Thus in this way geographically-dispersed project teams are able to publish their personal and team calendar data online.

    Publish Online

    Office Backstage

The Office Backstage(File tab) is a very useful feature which has been added to all the major applications within Office 2010. Outlook 2010 also includes this feature and allow users to easily save attachments, access account settings, clean their mailbox, and configure other settings.

    Office Backstage

    Scheduled View

Outlook 2010 includes a new schedule feature called Scheduled View which provides a better insight into your daily schedule, as recorded in your Outlook calendar. You can find this option located under the Home menu when you are inside the Schedule tab(which can be selected from bottom of the left-sidebar).

    Scheduled View

    OneNote Integration

Just like the other applications in Office 2010, OneNote 2010 has been integrated into Outlook 2010 as well. This option is located under the Home menu.

    OneNote 2010

Microsoft has outdone it’s competitors this time by making it more user-friendly, the complete UI change is one thing. Users who ditched Outlook 2007 might want to give Outlook 2010 a shot. Ofcourse not every product is perfect but it has enough reasons to persuade users to return. Now Thunderbird users can put their hopes on Mozilla, lets see how Thunderbird 3 shall fare. Enjoy!

  6. Google Voice Desktop Notification Apps

    by

Just like Google Wave, Google Voice has generated quite a buzz across the world. Google aims to change the way we communicate and since it is becoming more and more common, there are reasons why Google Voice must be on the desktop.

We are going to review two Google Voice desktop apps, their functionalities differ slightly but further work needs to be done on them before we can call them stable releases.

    Google Voice Adobe AIR App

Google Voice Adobe Air app is the first application to bring Google Voice to desktop. Since it is developer on Adobe Air platform, it can be used on Windows, Mac, and Linux. All voicemails, SMS, placed called, received calls, and missed calls can be accessed from it’s simple user interface. You can also place a quick call or send an SMS. Apart from the Inbox tab, you can also browse the contacts, search, and change settings.

    Google Voice adobe air

Download Google Voice Adobe Air App

    GVNotifier.NET

GVNotifier.net is an eye-candy Google Voice app notifier that works straight from the taskbar system tray. It can be used for two purpose only Send/Receive SMS and Calling. One of the biggest downside of this app is the lack of Contacts integration. Otherwise having said that, it is a great notification tool.

    google voice sms window

You can right-click the system tray to access the favorites list.

    google voice favorities

    gvnotifier notification

It works on Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7, but is recommended that you run it with Aero enabled on Vista and Windows 7.

    Download GVNotifier.net

    Conclusion

Google Voice adobe air app seems more complete, but lacks the proper taskbar notification features, while GVNotifier.net is a small app that works entirely from system tray and works as a great call/sms notifier. The adobe air app though, has the advantage for cross-compatibility.

We believe that Google will release their own official Google Voice Notifier in future just like they released the GMail Notifier app. Until an app doesn’t come out officially, you can use any of the above mentioned tools. Enjoy!

  7. Enable Administrator Account In Windows 7

    November 27, 2009 by

Those readers who have switched to Windows 7 from Vista will know that there is a default administrator account in Vista which is disabled by default. Same is the case with Windows 7, the default Administrator account is not enabled in the default settings and when you need to run any particular application in the administrator mode, then you manually assign it the admin right.

Lets see how we can enable the administrator user account in windows 7. But we will recommend to use this account for troubleshooting purposes only.

Open the command prompt with administrator privileges and run the following command. It will enable the default administrator account in Windows 7.

    net user administrator /active:yes

    Adminsitrator Mode

Now logout and you will see the Administrator account on the logon screen.

    Administrator Account Windows 7

In order to disable it again, run the same command with the following slight modification.

    net user administrator /active:no

    It’s that easy.

  8. Uninstall Or Remove Microsoft Office 2010

    by

When you buy a brand new computer or laptop from any popular manufacturer, it is always filled with pre-installed software. Also you will find trial version of Office 2010 which is valid for only 60 days.

There are complains from users that they are not able to remove Office 2010 from Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel. The reason why Office 2010 cannot be removed is due to missing Setup.xml file.

There are two methods to fix this problem. The first method is guaranteed to work, but if for any reason you are not able to remove Office 2010, follow the 2nd method(for advanced users only).

Method 1 – The Manual solution

Since the Setup.xml file is missing. All you have to do is to copy the setup.xml file from the groove folder from the source and paste it in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE14\Office Setup Controller\Groove.en-us\

Once done, run the uninstaller again and everything will be smooth again. For the sake of convenience I have provided both x86(32-bit) and x64(64-bit) setup.xml files in one simple zip archive. Just grab it and put it in the Groove folder as mentioned above.

    Setup.xml (x86 and x64)

Method 2 – The Advanced solution

Warning: Before following this method, create a system restore point just to be on the safe side. We are not responsible if any problem occurs.

This method requires you to download and run the Remove Office 2007 app. The name says Office 2007 but I have tested it to work with Office 2010 as well. Just load it up and hit GO to begin.

    Office 2010 uninstall

Make sure all windows and applications are closed before running the app.

    uninstalling Microsoft Office 2010

After the uninstallation is complete, it will automatically restart the computer. Once your computer starts again it will again look for traces of Office 2010 installation and remove them if any trace is found. When all is done, it will show you the success dialog

    Uninstall office 2010

Please note that this app is quite powerful and will remove Office 2010 forcefully. It does however not remove certain parts of Office 2010, which you can remove manually.

There are still some traces left behind. As you can see from the screenshot below Office 2010 is still present in Add/Remove Programs window. As long it is present here, you cannot reinstall Office 2010.

    Office 2010 add remove programs

So what will you do now? How will you remove the traces that are left behind. The answer is to use Windows Installer Cleanup Utility. Select Office 2010 from the list and hit Remove.

    Windows Installer Office 2010 Cleanup

Once done, Run CCleaner and fix all registry problems. Doing this will remove all Office 2010 registry entries. Now your uninstallation is complete. ;)

Alternative Method: You can also try uninstalling Office 2010 using CCleaner’s uninstall feature.

    Download Remove Office 2007

    Download Windows Installer Cleanup

    Download CCleaner

    Conclusion

I would highly recommend following the first method, but if it all else fails, then you can follow the 2nd method(only if you are an advanced user).

  9. Windows 7: Enable Aero Peek And Change Delay Time

    November 26, 2009 by

Windows 7 users are loving the great Aero Peak feature, you might have noticed that the peak button which is located in the right most side of the taskbar takes some time to display the desktop, you can increase/decrease this time. If you want to perform this task manually then you will have to make some modifications in the sensitive registry files.

Let me introduce you to a small, light-weight and portable utility called Desktop Peek Tweak which lets you adjust the peak time with a single click. Simply adjust the delay time by moving the slider. Once satisfied, hit the Save Desktop Delay button to complete the configuration.

    Desktop Peek Tweak

Also you can enable/disable the Desktop Peek feature by simply checking/unchecking the Enable Desktop Peek option.

    Download Desktop Peek Tweak

It works on both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows 7. Enjoy!

  10. Top 4 ePub Readers You Must Know About

    by

ePub(also referred as EPUB or EPub) stands for Electronic Publishing and is a standard e-book format which is used by all popular e-book readers out there, including Barnes & Noble Nook, Sony Reader, iPhone/iPod Touch(using various e-book apps), and more. ePub files have .epub extension.

There are various online as well as desktop tools which allow users to read .epub formats. We have covered four ePub readers which we believe you all should know about.

    Bookworm (Online Service)

Bookworm is an online service that aims to be become a leading free platform for reading ePub books online. It is part of O’Reilly Media. It takes only three steps, create an account, upload an ePub book or magazine, and start reading.

The benefit of this service is that you can read the e-book online no matter where you are located and which device you are using.

    bookworm

    EPUB Reader Firefox Add-On (Windows/Linux/Mac)

EPUBReader is a handy add-on for Firefox that can directly open any ePub format quickly. It is indeed faster and quicker than desktop software and shows the graphics far better than bookworm service.

This add-on opens the ePub file just like you can open PDF file in Firefox browser. Just hit the download link of any ePub book and select Open. If you have already downloaded the ePub book, then you can open it with Firefox.

    epub reader firefox addon

The interface is customizable, which means you can change the background colors, etc to your own liking. The navigations buttons are given at the bottom along with the option to change the fonts.

    Stanza (Mac/Windows)

Stanza is a desktop ePub reader and converter that is fast, light-weight, and simple. It can be used to save bookmarks and quick conversions. You can convert .epub format into tens of different other document formats including doc and pdf formats. If you want to read the ePub file in Amazon Kindle, there is an option for that as well.

    stanza epub reader

The only downside is formatting and navigation, the two most important aspects. For formatting it can be compared with Bookworm service but is not as great as EpubReader add-on for Firefox.

    MobiPocket Reader (Windows)

MobiPocket Reader is not only an advanced ePub books reader but is also a great professional books organizer. You can import books in PDF, ePub, or Office formats and organize them quickly. Just double-click a book and start reading.

    MobiPocket epub reader

The formatting of MobiPocket is better than the above mentioned tools and has an option to zoom into the book, useful for those who want to read the tiny text on the book. Also there is an advanced search box given on the top-right side which can drastically help in saving time.

    Conclusion

For quicker distraction-free reading, I found EPUBReader add-on to be the best. For traveling, I would prefer using Bookworm since all uploaded books can be accessed from anywhere in the world. For converting ePub books and reading them without worrying about Firefox crash, I would prefer Stanza. Lastly, if I am looking to organize all the books in one place, then MobiPocket Reader is the app to of choice.

All the above mentioned tools are great but the final selection would depend entirely on the user. Choose your app and let us know which one you like the best. If you know of any other app, do let us know. We love to try out new tools and services. Enjoy!
