1. Windows 7 Virtual Desktop Manager

    October 31, 2009 by

WindowsPager is not a new tool, but the latest update brings seamless integration to Windows 7. It is an opensource portable pager utility for Windows that creates four virtual desktops(also called virtual workspaces).

It integrates perfectly in the Windows 7 taskbar(also called superbar) with complete preview of apps running in virtual desktops. Clicking each icon will take you to it’s respective virtual desktop.

Apart from switching the desktops by clicking the icons in the taskbar, you can also switch by right-clicking any Windows title bar and selecting the virtual desktops.

    virtual desktops taskbar

You will be surprised to know that the preview of virtual desktops in the taskbar is live, which means that you will see which windows are open in each desktop and where they are positioned. To test this feature hold any window and move it around the desktop, watching the preview in the taskbar. ;)

    Download WindowsPager

It works on Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7. You will find executables for both 32-bit and 64-bit OS inside the zip archive. It is a portable tool which weights around 500Kb only and can run straight from the USB drive. Enjoy!

  2. Disable Internet Explorer 8

    by

Internet Explorer 8 offers a bunch of cool features and no doubt it works much better then its predecessors. But if you are using some other browsers, such as, Firefox or Chrome due to their security and speed, then you might like to disable Internet Explorer 8 to conserve system resources.

Disabling IE8 is very simple, first of all click Start, type Windows features on or off and hit Enter, the Windows Features dialogue box will be displayed. Once the Windows Features dialogue box is populated, you will be able to easily locate the Internet Explorer 8 option, uncheck it and click OK, it will take some time to apply the changes.

Once done, reboot your system and you will no longer see Internet Explorer. Enjoy!

    October 30, 2009 by

If you want your favorite application to start up automatically when your windows 7 login, then there is a small trick for it. We will demonstrate how you can set some applications to run during startup.

I configured the Internet Explorer to load on Windows 7 startup by going through the following steps.

First of all launch the Group Policy Editor by clicking Start, then type gpedit.msc and hit Enter. Now navigate to the User Configuration > Windows Settings > Scripts(Log on/Log off) option.

    Logon Logoff

Double click the Logon option from the main window and  click the Add button in the Logon Properties dialogue box.

    Add Logon

Now add the program which you wish to start up in the Script Name, you can leave the Script Parameters option blank. I entered the path of IE exe here.

    Add Scripts

Hit OK and reboot your system, you will see that the configured program will now launch on system startup. Enjoy!

  4. clipShow – Windows 7 Media Center Plugin To Watch Videos In Slideshow View & More

    by

clipShow is a plugin for Windows 7 Media Center that allows user to watch video in a slideshow fashion. It has a build-in feature called “Clip” that plays random video clips at 45sec, 90sec, and 2 minutes intervals, depending on your settings.

    clipShow Windows 7 Media Center

But the functionalities doesn’t end here. It integrates with Windows 7 Home Server and HomeGroup, which means that videos found in Windows 7 HomeGroup will also be included and you can view & create playlists from media stored in Windows Home Server.

The most impressive feature is the timeline view which organizes your videos by year(date) regardless of the fact where they are stored. Other great features are quick filtering and quick playlist creation – the former allows you to filter the results by a certain criteria and also by Year or Month, while the later allows you to create a playlist based on year, month, or search criteria. You can save the playlist as an ASX playlist file which can be played within the Media Center Shell.

It supports all formats that Windows 7 supports, don’t forget to add support for MKV format as well. Xbox users will love the extender support, since it is capable of working with all current Windows 7 Media Center Extenders, also including LinkSys and HP.

    Download clipShow

This plugin has been developed exclusively for Windows 7 Media Center, so it will only work on Windows 7. Installers for both 32-bit and 64-bit OS are given. Enjoy!

  5. Steam Gets Windows 7 Jumplist Support

    October 29, 2009 by

Steam is a widely popular client that allows users to buy new games, make friends, communicate with each other, and play multiplayer games. It has more than 20 millions users worldwide. In short, it is the most popular content delivery platform developed by Valve Corporation.

The latest update to Steam hasn’t bought any changes to the app itself, but it finally adds support for Windows 7 Jumplist. This is a huge update for gamers since they can now easily launch, change status, and access various tasks straight from the taskbar.

For some reason I was not able to Pin the games to Steam, so I have taken the screenshot below from Long Zheng.

  7. Split And Merge PDF Documents In Windows 7

    October 28, 2009 by

Immediately after installing Sumatra PDF Viewer in Windows 7, the need for a good tool to split and merge PDF document arised. I have to say that almost every software that I came across was buggy and didn’t work according to my expectations. Finally I gave Gios PDF Splitter and Merger a try and I have to say it works better than most apps out there.

This tool is not much known in the blogosphere and came under our radar just today. What I really like in this tool is simplicity to work with new projects and also the ability to merge JPEG photos with PDF documents. You can even merge multiple JPEG photos to make a complete PDF document, each image will be added as one page.

    Split PDF Document

To split a PDF document, click File > Add > PDF File. Once a PDF file has been added, select it and you will see the element settings on the right window. Since the document is split by pages, you can choose which page you want to include. You can either include all pages or include a specific page range.

Once done, select the output destination, give it a file name, and hit the Split into single page files button.

    Gios PDF splitter and merger

Under the element settings you will also find the number of pages of the selected PDF document.

    Merging PDF Documents

To merge a document you need to practically follow the same procedures as above. You can add as many PDF documents and JPEG images as you want, order them the way you like, chose the output destination and hit Merge PDF button.

    merge pdf

It is a portable utility(only 145KB in size) that beats out major commercial apps that aren’t even portable. If you want a tool for quick merging or splitting PDF files, give it a shot.

It works on Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7. Enjoy!

  8. YouTube Media Player

    by

On YouTube you can find almost every song, so what better way than making a complete media player out of it? Today we will cover two different apps – Muziic and TubeRadio.fm. Muziic is a desktop app that allows users to play YouTube music while TubeRadio is a web app. Both have the capability to create custom playlists.

    Muziic

Create a media player to play local files, add YouTube, add Radio, a few other features and you get Muziic. Basically most of it is based around YouTube itself. You just need to search for an artist or song and the results will be displayed instantly. Note that apart from the results it also shows the channel.

On the right side you will find the video preview of the music you are playing while below it is an option to organize playlist. To add a song to your playlist, simply hit the ‘+’ button in the search result. Once you have added the songs to the playlist, click Save to save it permanently.

    Download Muziic

    TubeRadio.fm

TubeRadio is an alternative for those users who prefer an online service rather than a desktop app. The benefit of web service is that your playlist and the favorite music collection can be accessed from virtually anywhere.

It has a very clean interface and looks pretty much like iTunes and Spotify. Just search for an artist and you will be shown the albums(album art taken from Last.fm), search for a song and you will be shown a huge result list.

    TubeRadio.fm

    TubeRadio music.fm

The saved playlists are displayed under My Playlist on the left sidebar. You can also make a public playlist and share it with the world. An option to shuffle and repeat songs are given just above the volume slider.

    TubeRadio.fm

Both tools are useful in their own right, you can give them a shot to decide which one suits you best. For more, also give Songr a try, it is a tool to search, play, and download mp3 songs. Enjoy!

  10. Use Dropbox To Make Files Public In Two Clicks

    October 27, 2009 by

Dropbox/Public is a free tool that allows Dropbox users to upload any file or folder and make it public in just two click. Suppose you want to share a file or folder with your friend over Instant Messenger(IM) or want to share a file with other users on the forum quickly.

In this case you can use Dropbox/Public to quickly upload your files and folders to Dropbox Public folder in compressed ZIP archive. When the files and folders are uploaded, the link to access them is automatically copied to your Windows clipboard, thus the user only has to paste it and start sharing it with friends.

It can integrate in Windows context menu, thus allowing users to quickly upload the files in only two clicks. When you run dropbox-public.exe, it will ask if you want to add it in “Send To” explorer context menu, select Yes to add it and select No to remove it.

    dropbox-public-addcontext

Now simply right-click the file(s) or folder(s), go to Send To, and select Dropbox-Public (zipped) or Dropbox-Public.

    dropbox-public-context

I would recommend choosing Zipped since it will help reduce the overall size. It will then ask you to enter your Dropbox database ID. What is database id? It is explained in the dialog window screenshot below.

    dropbox-public-askdbid

Once you enter it, choose the Dropbox/Public folder. In this folder the file will be saved and then automatically get uploaded to Dropbox. When the upload is complete, you will be notified about it via the system tray icon.

    dropbox-public-traytip

It’s that simple. This app makes sharing more easier and gives Dropbox users an edge over other services.

    Download Dropbox/Public

This tool is developed by an independent developer and is not affiliated with Dropbox in any way. For compression it uses Info-Zip. It works on Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7. Enjoy!
