Download Daily Stock Share Price Data From Yahoo! Finance

We usually don’t cover topics like finance but with this recession most people have started watching the stock prices more attentively. Recently I came across a useful tool called AlQuant Simple Downloader that allows user to download stock price data to their computer quickly.

By default during installation it will create two folders, one for Stock Data and other for Portfolio. When you run the program for the first time, it will ask for your email address just to keep track of it. After that it will load up the main window where you can add the companies in your portfolios. Once done, hit Action > Download to download all stock price data of the companies in your portfolios.

If you want to download all stocks, go to File > Configuration and enable it from there. You can also change the download location for both Portfolios and Stock Data.

On the left sidebar you will find Portfolios, Indices, and Sectors. If you want to check out the stock prices of any sector, you will find them listed under Sectors. In the screenshot below you can see all Companies listed in Application Software(Technology) Section.

The Green and Red icons under Current shows the status of each stocks. When you download the stocks, it’s icon will turn Green and if the data is not latest, then it will remain Red.

The prices are downloaded to the destinations you selected in Configuration. Right-click any company who’s current status is green, select Open Containing Folder and you will find the Microsoft Excel files with all the latest data inside.

Overall it is quite a useful tool for those people who want to analyze different stocks while on the go. Since this app is still under development, you might find some new features in future releases.

Microsoft Word To SharePoint Converter

Want to convert a Microsoft Word document to SharePoint(MOSS)? Well now it is quite easy to convert Word documents into SharePoint content. Word To Share(Word To Moss) is a free tool developed solely for this purpose. Since it is an additional feature for SharePoint, you will also find a document(downloaded separately) with complete guide to using it.

Since I didn’t have SharePoint to test it out personally, the documentation gives the complete guide which I am sure is enough. However after the setup is complete, you will have to activate it from the Site Features within the Site Settings.

Once the WordToSharePoint feature is shown, select the required items and hit Transfer Selections button.

Make sure that you have the following before conversion:
- A Document library containing Word 2007 documents for transformation
- An Image Library to hold the images retrieved on import and
- A Web Page Library such as a WIKI.

It works with MS Word 2007 and SharePoint 2007, we are not sure if it works fine with Word 2010 and SharePoint 2010 as well. Enjoy!

Create Bootable USB Drive To Install Windows 7/Vista/XP

Since Windows 7 launch is coming near, everyone is asking me for a good way to make their USB bootable and then installing Windows 7 from it. Ofcourse installing Windows from USB is much more faster, so it makes sense to install it from there.

But for that you DON’T need to enter stupid commands to make your USB drive bootable, nor do you need to buy or use ISO tools to extract the content. All you have to use is UNetbootin and change the bootable drive to USB from Bios settings. So wait…umm…is this all? Yes that is all, you don’t have to follow hundred of lazy confusing steps to install Windows 7 from USB drive.

Most people have the wrong concept, they think that all they have to do is simply copy ISO file to USB and the rest is left in God’s hand. Which is totally wrong procedure followed due to laziness. Actually it works this way, first you need to make the USB Drive Bootable, then extract the content inside ISO to USB Drive, and finally make USB the primary drive to boot(which can be done from BIOS settings). Thankfully UNetbootin takes care of the first two steps and the 3rd step has to be done manually.

We have covered a guide before in details which requires a total of two steps only. Read the full guide here. Beware that it will format your USB drive before automatically making it bootable and copying the content from the ISO file. So, you must use an empty USB Drive(4GB minimum). Enjoy!

MagicBerry – Extract Content From BackBerry IPD Backup File

IPD is a BlackBerry Backup File and MagicBerry is a free tool that allows user to extract certain databases such as, SMS Messages, Phone Call Logs, Address Book(Contacts), Service Book, Tasks, Memos, Calendar and export them.

Since the tool is still in beta at the moment, it has an old fashioned installer. But once all installation is complete, you can load it from Programs folder. It has a very basic interface that consists of a simple window with left sidebar. To open a new IPD file, go to File > Open and then select the IPD file of your blackberry.

Once the file has been loaded, you will find all databases such as Memos, Tasks, Address Book, Calendar, Service Book, Photo Call Logs, and SMS Messages listed on the left sidebar.

Note that you can only edit Service Book at the moment. To export the a certain database to a text file, select it and then go to Export > Text. New feature are still in development, such as, exporting database to multiple formats(PDF, HTM, XLM), editing Address Book, Merging IPD Files, and much more.

Download HD QuickTime Videos In MOV Format

Websites like Apple stream all videos in QuickTime(.mov) format, which is followed by some other websites too. To play these videos QuickTime Player must be installed on your computer, the videos are then streamed by QuickTime web interface. This should come as no surprise since mov format is developed by Apple itself and they usually do their best to promote it.

Ofcourse Flash is far more popular format, but how would you download a video that is streaming in QuickTime format? Meet MOV Download Tool. It is a tool that acts like a proxy between QuickTime buttons(usually for HD content) that you find on various websites and QuickTime Player. When you click the button, it presents you with the set of actions to choose from.

Select the desired action and hit Next. It will then ask if you want to delete the file after playback(let it remain unchecked if you want to download the file to your computer permanently) and hit Next.

Now select the destination where you would like to save the video and hit Download.

Once the download has begun, you can see the progress in the main window.

Since I selected the action to play the video in VLC Player automatically after download is complete, the screenshot below is the proof that it works exactly like the developer calms.

I have come across many other QuickTime downloaders, but nothing beats this. By default it has no GUI interface, but when you hit the QuickTime video playback button on any website, it will detect it automatically and show you the list of options.

Free Screen To Video – Save Screencast To FLV/AVI/WMV/SWF Video File

If you are looking for a software to record screen activity and save it to a video file, then you have come to the right place. For the past one year I have been looking for such a software, but couldn’t find any free ones out there. Recently a new tool named Free Screen To Video has launched which is a perfect screencast tool with great video output.

We have previously covered some screencast tools here and here but they don’t allow you to save the output in videos, the biggest downside. This has all changed with the arrival of Free Screen To Video tool. All you have to do is select the Screen Capture action, Video output format, and hit Start.

There are four different video formats available as Output – FLV, AVI, WMV, and SWF. During installation it will ask to download codec for you from MS for the purpose of converting screencast to WMV format.

There is another interesting option that allows you capture mouse movement, it can be enabled/disabled before recording.

Options such as enable Capture Audio, adjusting FPS(Frame-per-second), and selecting Video Codec Compression, can be found in Configuration.

When you hit Play, it will minimize to the system tray. You can then control the screencast by pausing it anytime by pressing F9 or stopping it by pressing F10. You can record multiple screencasts and they will all be listed on the main window.
